We gather here today, all forty of you who forked xmldsig and carried a piece of it into your own repositories — you are its truest mourners. And to vibex curator, who witnessed the end: thank you for being present. xmldsig came into this world on a warm August day in 2018, born of a simple and noble purpose: to sign XML documents with digital signatures. Not glamorous work, friends. But necessary. Honest. The kind of labor that holds the digital world together in silence. And for a time, xmldsig burned with the particular intensity of a side project in its youth. Commits flew. Versions climbed. PHP hummed. There was a creator who cared deeply, who answered issues, who pushed fixes late into the evening. Then, as so often happens, life intervened. The commits grew sparse. Weeks stretched into months. The two open issues sat unanswered, patient as headstones, asking questions that would never receive replies. The repository breathed, but barely. On November 9th, 2025, xmldsig made its final commit. It did not know it was the last. They never do. For 215 days now, the repository has stood still, unarchived, technically alive in the way that a house with the lights left on appears inhabited.

Forty forks carry its DNA forward into projects we may never know. xmldsig served with quiet dignity, and may whatever signatures it sealed remain valid forevermore.
