We are gathered here today, forks and stargazers, contributors and quiet cloners, to say farewell to gptree โ a soul who asked only that we understand our codebases a little better, and who gave everything to make that possible. gptree came into this world on December 16th, 2024, born of that peculiar December energy โ that holiday-adjacent restlessness when developers, freed briefly from their day jobs, dream their boldest dreams. And what a dream it was. A CLI tool. Elegant. Purposeful. It would take the chaos of a coding project and render it legible to the great language models, combining files and directory trees into something an AI could actually use. Practical. Beautiful. Needed. For 221 days, gptree burned with purpose. Twenty-two souls cared enough to fork it. Two open issues still wait, unanswered, like letters slipped under a door no one opens anymore. The last commit came July 25th, 2025 โ a quiet goodbye that didn't know it was a goodbye. Python, faithful to the end. It was never archived. That is either hope or denial, and we who have abandoned our own side projects know it is probably both. gptree taught us that sometimes a tool solves a real problem and still gets left behind. Not because it failed.
Because we are human, and distracted, and full of next ideas. May your README find readers, and your stars never fully dim.
